The Winter School No. 70, built in 1870 near Lecompton, Kansas, is a historic one-room schoolhouse showcasing 19th-century vernacular house and barn construction along the frontier in Kansas. Renovated and listed on the National Registry of Historic Places in 2020, it features an ancient remnant prairie for natural education opportunities.

Prairie Happy Hour

Saturday, 2:30-4pm

The affable ecologist, Courtney Masterson, returns with Native Lands to parade us around the prairie. In this quarterly series, Courtney shows us some of her favorite species and answers questions you may have about this ecosystem native to Kansas. Cocktails are provided by our spirited barkeep, Aly Bush.

Jazz Picnic

Sunday, 1pm - 3pm

Jackson Graham Trio features a vibraphone with their soulful blend of jazz.

We will have some Kernza samples, first come first served.

Kid-Friendly Activities

The entire grounds are kid-friendly! There are lots of outdoor games like horseshoes, cornhole, basketball, a ninja line, chalk, a tree fort, and a scavenger hunt. Inside, kids and parents may sift through the books, draw, or play with blocks. Visitors can also jump into our curriculum with custom-made art-based activities as well as short videos at a kiosk.
