Established in 2006, Juniper Hill Farms (jhf-ks.com) is a rapidly growing certified organic vegetable production farm located in the heart of the Kaw River Valley just 10 minutes north of downtown Lawrence. Our quiet country home turned into a bustling year-round farming operation when Scott Thellman, Jr turned his sights on growing food for local grocery stores and restaurants when he was 16 years old—a true first-generation farmer. Now, 19 years later, Juniper Hill Farms has grown into a large, diversified operation that Scott, his crew, and the whole Thellman family will be happy to share with you on the grounds of the main farm. You’ll see new greenhouses, farm tractors, planting equipment, and even a lovely old fire engine! Then when you’re ready for a rest and refreshment, you can stop in at our agritourism venue called Juniper Hill Farm & Table (juniperhillfarmtable.com).
Rustic but comfortable, our 100-year-old iconic Kansas barn is now home to a small restaurant, bar and event venue called Juniper Hill Farm & Table. We’re open for Pizza Nights three seasons out of the year, specializing in wood-fired pizza with many ingredients sourced straight from the farm.
During Farm Tour we offer a simple menu from 11:00a.m. to 4 pm both days--or whenever the pizza dough runs out--with plenty of cider for the kids and the option of wine or beer for the grownups. And as always, free popcorn all day long!
Scott and his farm crew will staff a vegetable market by the main barn and as always, we’ll have beautiful mums and pumpkins for purchase at the farm.
New this year:
An additional crop to explore: field-grown flowers - featuring wide, fantastic varieties of dahlias! Juniper Hill Farm welcomes our new flower-farming friend, Rachel Bredemus, and her flower enterprise, Studio Lark, LLC. So exciting!
Scott and his crew will host a tented market where you can see and purchase all of the produce fresh picked from the farm's fall crops, including many kinds of pumpkins, winter squash, lots of peppers, some late variety tomatoes--ripe and green, root vegetables and, of course, more pumpkins--large and small, baking or just decorative. Farm equipment will be displayed on the lawn with farmer/crew available to answer any questions.
Scotty, Kyle and other members of the farm crew are available to chat and provide guided tours of the main property as requested. Rachel will be available for guided tours around the flower field. Lovely!
Kids: We set up a roping "bull" in our corral and invite kids to saddle up and lasso him. (No real animals, just imagination required!) Weather permitting, we set up a pumpkin patch so little kids can easily pick their perfect pumpkin without too far a trek from the barn.
