The Lumberyard Arts Center, located in downtown Baldwin City, enhances community wellbeing through creative experiences in the visual arts, performing arts, literary arts and textile arts. In February 2019, the Kansas Senate passed Resolution 1711 designating Baldwin City the Quilt Capital of Kansas due to the community’s rich cultural tradition of quilting. In partnership with Quilters’ Paradise, the Lumberyard Arts Center initiated Quilt Capital of Kansas textile arts programing. Now in its fourth year, the partnership has grown to include adult and youth textile art programming that includes classes, community open sew, gallery exhibits and textile artist conversations. For example, in January 2023, internationally known story quilter, Marla Jackson, exhibited her African American story quilts and shared conversations with the public, including stories of the Underground Railroad. Our activities provide connections to share stories about families, communities, heritage and traditions of quilting with one another.
